I know it’s been a long, long while since my last update… but this is what I’ve been doing since graduation nearly 2 months ago (crazy how time flies). I’ve been working at Spectrum Youth & Family Services in Burlington. A team of people (myself included) just opened up the new SRO (single resident occupancy) … Continue reading »
Do You Watch Your Mouth?
TRIGGER WARNING: Talk of prison, violence, rape/rape culture, and suicide. The term “politically correct” is thrown around an awful lot these days. People often use it as an attack, or to prove that someone is “too sensitive”. It has somehow picked up a negative connotation. To me, being “politically correct” is synonymous with being respectful. It doesn’t … Continue reading »
Send Silence Packing
Active Minds is a nation-wide organization that focuses on the destigmatization and promotion of awareness of mental health issues on college campuses.
Each year they put together a “Send Silence Packing Tour“. This is a traveling exhibit that promotes suicide awareness. AM brings 1,100 backpacks representing the 1,100 college student lives lost to suicide each year. They display the backpacks accompanied by personal stories from each students family/friend. It’s an incredibly emotional exhibit that encourages dialogue and promotes awareness of an issue that has been long overlooked in our collegiate communities.
While Champlain’s chapter of Active Minds is very young, we are hoping to be a stop on the Send Silence Packing tour next year. Click the link above fore more info on Send Silence Packing and see if there is a stop near you.
We’re Your Sexual Health Experts.
Recently, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England went through a rebranding process. Bright colors and extremely in-your-face taglines taken straight form the vernacular of the modern young adult. The first time I saw any of this was a full ad on the side of a bus. It was bright pink and said “We’re Your Friends … Continue reading »
Pray the Devil Back to Hell
While it has been just about 2 weeks since I’ve returned from San Francisco, I can’t help but continuously reflect upon the trip. I experienced so many new things in just under a week. Brandi (the women I was staying with who just-so-happens to be an employee of JVS and my super fantastic cousin) invited … Continue reading »
Strictly Business
While in San Francisco I had the pleasure to stay with Brandi Mandato of JVS and meet a few other members of the company. It’s an amazing nonprofit focused on transforming lives by helping people build skills and find jobs to achieve self-sufficiency. I’ve been applying for jobs lately and I’m having trouble deciding exactly where … Continue reading »
San Francisco
Taking a break from typical posts for a day. I’ll be spending the next 5 days or so in San Francisco. I’m trying to get my networking on and am meeting with people from a few amazing organizations. So far I’m staying with a wonderful manager from JVS, have met a freelance grant writer, been in contact with a woman from Planned Parenthood of the Bay Area, and will be having drinks with a fella form CORA. I’ll keep updating with relevant content and a few side notes here and there throughout the week. And hey, if any of you non-profiteers out there are in the Bay Area, drop me a line!
Is This The Job Of The Government?
Is This The Job Of The Government?
Ad NEDAW comes to a close, I stumbled upon this article in the Huffington Post. The question they’re asking: Should the government intervene in the use of overly skinny models?
Just last year the Council for Fashion Designers of America updated their health initiatives to suggest that employers be weary of a model they fear may have an eating disorder. However, these guidelines are simply suggestions, not mandates. Do you think the government should be able to tell an entire industry how to look and eat? Click on the title link and vote. I’ll be posting the results as soon as they are published!
Dying to be Thin
TRIGGER WARNING: Talk of eating disorders. This documentary put on by PBS and NOVA is a very interesting look into eating disorders. Most of this documentary is spent explaining the science behind two of the most common eating disorders: anorexia and bulimia with a focus on female ballerinas. I found it to be far less emotional … Continue reading »
